Artist Profile

Patty Paulus has combined various careers over the years which have included teaching, painting and graphic design. Currently she teaches art at St. Paul Academy and Summit School and pursues her painting career in her home studio in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Patty received a B.S. degree in Art Education with a minor in English from the University of Minnesota in 1972. She began teaching in the Anoka-Hennepin School District in 1973 as a K-6 Art Specialist and helped develop the first K-6 art curriculum for the district with art coordinator Jean Thurston. After teaching at Anoka-Hennepin for close to 11 years, she took courses in graphic design from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) and started her own graphic design firm called Patty Paulus Graphic Design. She designed over 50 logos, brochures and a variety of publicity materials for many artists, musicians and arts groups in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. At the same time she was a keyliner for Cats Pajamas, a graphic design firm in St. Paul. In 1999, Patty had an opportunity to be a sabbatical replacement at St. Paul Academy and Summit School in the Lower School for one of the art teachers. In 2000, she was offered a part-time position in the art department and has combined that with her freelance painting career in her home studio. Patty has been able to intersect her painting career with her composer husband, Stephen Paulus, by providing artwork for the covers of many of his choral, chamber, orchestral and opera CDs. To see examples of their collaborative projects, link to for CD cover art on Albany Records, Gasparo Records, Ten-Thousand Lakes and other record companies. Patty and her husband Stephen reside in St. Paul, Minnesota and have two adult sons, Greg and Andrew Paulus.

Artist Statement

The underlying objective in my work is to evoke an emotion from the viewer that taps into a memory of a place or time in one’s life. Through the use of blended colors, texture and energetic line, even my representational images have an abstract element to them that allows for an expansion of meaning. I might work from one of my photographs or just start with certain colors to see where the painting itself leads me to discover or uncover. By allowing my sub-conscious mind to guide me, lines and texture are added where they are needed at a particular moment in time. The experience of painting becomes a type of meditation within the present moment that allows for complete freedom of expression. The layering of materials and paint can represent the complexity of our lives and the many layers of our personality which make us all unique individuals of interest to each other. My intent is for my paintings to be intriguing to the eye and to convey some personal meaning for the viewer.
